A Big Victory For Bereaved Parents
Covington, WA -- March 21, 2008 -- Local charity, A Small Victory, has made big changes over the last six months. “We are still the same charity, with the same goals,” says A Small Victory co-founder Liz Allen, “We are just achieving those goals with better execution.” A Small Victory has honed their Loss Kit program so that they are now able to support many more people. A Small Victory has also unveiled a new logo and a new website with a wealth of information.
A Small Victory provides CARE Packages to newly bereaved parents which guide them creating memories and equip them with knowledge in order to help them grieve in a healthy way. CARE Packages contain many items including several books, air-dry clay for foot and hand molds, pamphlets and a special baby book just for babies that don’t come home from the hospital. CARE Packages from A Small Victory support all grieving mothers, without regard to race, income level, or sexual orientation.
Katie’s story is representative of the many women who are in need of services provided by A Small Victory. In 2006, the day after her due date, Katie noticed her son Griffin wasn’t moving. A few days later Griffin entered the world silently, weighing 5½ pounds. Like most women, Katie was totally unprepared for her loss. Fortunately her hospital provided her with a Loss Kit from A Small Victory. Katie says, “Without that kit I would have had nothing. When you’re in that situation you can't even think. I will never be the same - I will never be able to be as happy as I was before he died. But without the Loss Kit I would have nothing to remember Griffin by.”
Each year in Washington State roughly 10,000 babies die between 13 weeks gestation and one month of life. There are around 600,000 such deaths nationally. A Small Victory is the only known program of its kind in Washington State. There are only three other programs nationally that are implementing similar programs, though A Small Victory is the only one with this exact execution. Currently, A Small Victory provides CARE Packages to Puget Sound area hospitals and to grieving women who request them nationwide. A Small Victory has supported families in 17 states and 2 territories in the past two years.
“I can’t stop losses from happening,” Allen states, “But I can help to stop the feeling of guilt and regret many bereaved parents feel. I never want parents to feel the way I did after losing my daughter.” Liz Allen and her husband lost their firstborn just days before birth in 2004, they have created A Small Victory in her memory. There are many, many more woman in not only Washington State but through out the nation that are in need of assistance from A Small Victory.
