A Small Victory, a Covington based non-profit group supporting families after babies die, has surpassed expectations of its founders in its first year.
When co-founders Liz and Ethan Allen started the campaign in memory if their daughter in May 2006, all they hoped was to donate 12 ”loss kits’ to Valley Medical Center. But as of this month, kits have gone to 30 families all over Washington as well as three families in other states.
To continue moving forward, the orginization is preparing for its next big progect, a major fundraiser this summer, the Allens said. An auction is slated for 1 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Spitfire in Seattle. Food, music, drinks and a silent auction are planned.
A Small Victory is in the process of seeking sponsors and auction donations for the event.
Each year in Washington, 13,000 babies die through reported miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death before 28 days old. There are roughly 1 million nationally.
A Small Victory is the only known program of its kind in Washington. Loss kits containing baby blankets, disposable cameras, air-dry clay for hand and feet molds, blank journals, pens, and bereavement information to Puget Sound-area hospitals and nationally to families who request them.
