The tree logo was chosen as a symbol of eternal life and and of one's family. With strength and support from deep roots and a strong trunk, a tree continues to grow no matter what is going on in the world. A Small Victory is acting as roots and trunk for bereaved families by supporting them and helping them trough their loss.
In 2004, Liz and Ethan Allen would have never guessed they would have end up where they are today. They met, fell in love and decided to get married. Little did they know, there was already a little sparkle of life within Liz, their daughter, who would forever change the world.
Liz's pregnancy was far from perfect and she developed complications. Due to these complications the Allen's were preparing to deliver their daughter early. Be that as it may, at just over 31 weeks, they were told their baby no longer had a heartbeat. Liz then had to deliver.
Janell Victory was stillborn after 24 hours of labor. Like all new parents, the Allen's thought she was the most perfect and precious thing on earth. Holding her for that first time, they compared features; she had Liz's eyes and, undoubtedly, Ethan's nose. Three days later the Allen's left the hospital but instead of bringing home a new baby they brought home a small box containing footprints and a lock of hair.
While most families have a life time to create memories with their new babies, the Allen's had just hours and, after the initial shock of Janell's death began to fade, they realized how much they had missed out on.
"We have just one picture of our baby. We never dressed her, never had a funeral, we never even unwrapped the blanket to see her sweet baby feet," recalls Liz. The Allen's only had a few hours to be a family with Janell and they feel they have little to show for it.
As years went on the Allen's were blessed with another child, Phoenix. Watching him grow was such a blessing, but bittersweet. He looked so much like Janell, and those feelings of guilt and regret about what they did and didn't do with Janell were all too frequent. Liz and Ethan discussed these feelings and decided that they never wanted a bereaved parent to feel like that again so they founded A Small Victory in May 2006 in memory of Janell.
In it's first eight months, A Small Victory helped thirteen families make memories with the children they lost. Many more were given an outlet for their grief through the hours Liz spent with them via email, phone and in person.
In 2007, A Small Victory improved on what they had been doing and helped nineteen more families. However, in August 2007, Liz was in the last month of another high-risk pregnancy and A Small Victory was put on hold until further notice.
Now, in 2008, A Small Victory is excited to be back and running at full speed. Several changes have been made to the contents of A Small Victory's Loss Kits and further changes will be made over the next year. A Small Victory is preparing to aid over thirty families in the next few months and has a 2008 goal to assist eighty families turn their misfortune into memories.
To date, over 60 Loss Kits have been distributed to 19 US States and 2 Canadian Territories.
